I was on H1B since Sept 2006(through Masters Quota) and was laid off a week ago. I still have about 6 months remaining on I-797. I am trying hard to get another job. My wife is on a valid H1B. As far as I understand I am out of status as of right now.
1. How long does it take to change status from my condition to H4 and how to do it? (I mean do I need to contact a immigration lawyer)
2. Is it complicated to get the status changed back to H1B after I find a job?
3. How much time I practically have to get going on the transfer. I dont want to wait a month.
4. Anybody has any other suggestions on what should I do?

Please advise.

You can file I-539 yourself to change your status to H4. I got my wife's in just one month. But i have read on this forum taking 3 months even. Once you get a job you can get back to H1B if it's a genuine offer especially these days. Or you can switch to B1 asking time for searching a job. Or switch to F1.
